Volkswagen T-Roc 2023 - start from 138 AED / day

Book a Volkswagen T-Roc 2023 rental in Dubai before lunch and we can usually have it outside your building by mid-afternoon, since delivery runs one to two hours across most of the city. There's a no-deposit option, we take debit cards and cash as well as credit, and the minimum age is 18 rather than the 21 most desks insist on. All of which is useful, but it isn't the reason to pick this particular car. You rent a T-Roc because you want the raised seating position and the VW cabin without paying SUV money for fuel every few days. That trade is what this page is about.

What a week in it actually costs to run

This is the number that decides most T-Roc bookings, so take it first. The tank holds 50 litres, which is small for something shaped like an SUV, and the 1.4-litre turbo is claimed at roughly 16 km/L combined. Nobody hits the claimed figure in Dubai traffic. Expect somewhere in the region of 12 to 13 km/L on a normal week of school runs, mall trips and one or two motorway stints, which works out at around 600 km between fills.

For most renters that means filling up once, maybe twice, across seven days. Set that against a full-size SUV drinking through a 70-litre tank at half the economy and the gap over a week is real money. The small tank is the only annoyance: you visit the pump slightly more often, but you pay much less each time.

Two other costs to know before you set off. Salik tolls are billed to you as the renter, and at four dirhams a gate they add up if your daily route crosses two. Any RTA fine issued during the rental passes through as well. The rate includes 300 km a day and AED 0.5 per kilometre beyond that, which only a Dubai to Abu Dhabi return trip would trouble.

Space, the boot and the airport run

The T-Roc is a tall hatchback more than it is a real SUV, and the packaging reflects that. The 445-litre boot is genuinely good for the size, better than most family hatchbacks, and it takes two large hard cases stood upright with room for a couple of soft bags on top. That covers a DXB or DWC collection for a couple, or a family of four travelling sensibly. Add a third large case and you're loading the rear seat.

The back seat is fine for two adults on a cross-town run and comfortable for kids all week. Three across the back works for a short hop and gets complained about on anything longer, because the T-Roc is 1,819 mm wide and that's simply not a lot of shoulder room. Fold the rear bench and the load bay opens right up, which is the version of this car that handles a furniture run or a bulky pram.

Parking is where the shape pays off. At 4,251 mm long it's shorter than most saloons, so tight Marina multi-storey bays and the awkward columns in older mall car parks are straightforward. The high seating position and square corners make it easy to place, and reversing into a narrow space doesn't turn into a three-attempt exercise. It sits high enough to clear Dubai speed bumps and normal mall ramps without complaint at sensible speed, but this is a raised hatchback rather than a real SUV, so the steepest car park ramps are worth taking slowly and at an angle rather than straight on.

Cooling a cabin that's been sitting in the sun

Between June and September a parked car in open sun becomes genuinely unpleasant, and what matters is recovery time, not the badge on the climate control. The T-Roc does well here for one boring reason: the cabin is small. There's less air to shift than in a big seven-seater, so the front vents pull the temperature down within a couple of minutes of driving off rather than the five or six a large SUV needs.

Be honest about the back, though. Rear vents aren't a given across the range, so if you're carrying children in the back through July, ask us which of our cars have them and we'll tell you straight. Standard practice helps either way: drop the windows for the first thirty seconds to push the hot air out, then close up and let the system work. Underground or shaded parking makes more difference than anything the car itself can do.

The drive, and where it runs out of ideas

150 hp through an eight-speed automatic is enough for the way people actually drive here. It merges onto Sheikh Zayed Road without drama and sits at 120 quietly, and the gearbox is smooth once warm, if slightly hesitant pulling away in stop-start traffic. Push for a fast overtake at speed and you'll find the limit of a small turbo four in a tall body, but that limit sits well past anything the traffic normally asks.

It's front-wheel drive, which makes it a good road car and a poor sand car whatever the ride height suggests. A graded track to a campsite is fine. Soft dune driving is not.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the T-Roc if you're one or two people, occasionally three or four, who want an SUV driving position and a well-finished cabin without the fuel bill that usually comes attached. For a resident on a monthly rental doing a city commute, or a visiting couple with two cases and a week of driving, it's one of the better value picks in the compact class.

Look elsewhere in three cases. If you're carrying four adults plus airport luggage regularly, the width and the boot will annoy you and a mid-size SUV or a large saloon is the right call. If your week includes real off-road driving, you need a proper 4x4 with all-wheel drive and low-range capability. And if the car spends its life on short city errands with no highway work at all, a small hatchback does the same job for less, and you'd be paying for a raised ride height you never use.
