The headline reason to choose the 2025 over an older MG5 is the engine's frugality. At up to 16.8 km per litre on a combined cycle, it's tuned to make a tankful last. The 45-litre tank then stretches past 600 km in mixed city use, which for most renters means filling once across a seven-day booking. In a market where petrol is cheap but your time isn't, fewer stops genuinely adds up.

The CVT with its eight simulated steps is part of that economy story. It holds the engine in its efficient range rather than chasing revs, so steady city driving is smooth and quiet. It's a setup built to save fuel, and it does.

On Sheikh Zayed Road and the open highway

The same tuning that makes the MG5 frugal also caps its enthusiasm. With 114 hp through a CVT, it cruises happily at 100 to 120 once it's up to speed, settled and quiet enough for a longer run to Abu Dhabi or out to the airport. The catch is the moment you need a quick burst. Overtaking at highway speed asks for a run-up, and the CVT lets the revs rise while the speed builds steadily. Plan the move and it's fine. Expect a shove in the back and you'll be disappointed.

For a week of mostly city driving with the occasional motorway stretch, that's an easy compromise. If your days are spent fighting for gaps on the E11, this isn't the car.

Boot and cabin space

The 512-litre boot is large for an economy sedan and the reason the MG5 punches above its rate. Two big suitcases plus soft bags swallow into it without folding the seats, so a terminal pickup at DXB or DWC is straightforward. Inside, the cabin seats five, with two adults comfortable in the back and room for child seats. Plastics are built to a budget, which is exactly what you'd expect at this price, but the space on offer is real.

Cooling in a Dubai summer

Park in July heat and the cabin bakes, no surprise there. The AC recovers it quickly once you're moving, with strong front vents that take the edge off within a couple of minutes. There are no rear vents, so passengers behind wait a little longer on the hottest days, though in a cabin this size the cool air spreads soon enough. A shaded or basement spot makes the first minute far more bearable.

The usual Dubai costs are yours. Salik tolls bill to the renter, RTA fines during the rental pass to you, and a child seat is required for under-fours, which we fit on request. Note that on this car extra kilometres beyond the daily 250 are charged, so a heavy inter-emirate week is worth planning.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the MG5 2025 if low running cost is the goal and your week is built around city driving with light highway use. It's the most economical MG5 we offer, roomy for the class, and easy to live with day to day. Choose something else if you need quick highway pace or a more refined cabin, where a Corolla or Elantra earns its higher rate. For value-focused renters who'd rather fill up once than chase performance, the 2025 MG5 is the smart pick.
