The roof, and when to actually use it

The folding soft-top is the whole point, and it works at low speed so you can open or close it at a red light without stopping the trip. The catch in Dubai is timing. From roughly November to March, early mornings and evenings are perfect for roof-down driving along the coast or out past the city limits. In high summer, with afternoons in the high 40s, you'll keep it shut and the AC running for most of the day, dropping the roof only after dark when the heat finally lets go.

That's not a flaw, it's just how a convertible lives here. Plan your roof-down hours around the cooler ends of the day and the car rewards you. Try it at 2pm in July and you'll close it within a minute.

The drive, and the heat

This is where the Z4 earns the rate. The turbo four makes 258 hp and gets the car to 100 in 5.4 seconds, so it pulls away from traffic with real urgency and has plenty left for an overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road. It's rear-wheel drive with the weight sitting low, so it changes direction quickly and feels planted at a cruise rather than nervous. On the E11 it sits at the limit comfortably and asks to be pushed past it, which the cameras here will punish, so keep an eye on the speedo.

The cabin is small, and in summer that works in your favour once you're moving. Parked in the sun the seats and wheel get punishing within minutes, but the AC pulls a two-seat cabin down far faster than it would in a big SUV. Vent it for thirty seconds with the doors open, close up, and the front vents do the rest quickly. There are no rear seats to cool, so all the cold air goes where you're sitting.

Luggage, parking and the practical limits

The boot holds 281 litres, which is genuinely useful for a roadster. Two soft weekend bags fit, or one medium case plus a backpack. What it won't do is swallow two full-size suitcases, so for an airport run with real luggage this is the wrong car and a sedan is the call. With only two seats, there's also nowhere to put a third person, full stop.

At 4.3 metres it's short and easy to thread through tight multi-storey bays and Marina ramps, and the low nose clears most speed bumps if you take the steeper mall ramps at an angle and a crawl. Visibility over your shoulder with the roof up is the usual convertible compromise, so reverse parking takes a couple of extra seconds. The Salik tolls you pass are billed to you, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you as well.

Who should rent the Z4, and who shouldn't

Rent it if you want a genuine open-top sports car for a week in the cooler months, or for evening drives in summer, and it's one or two of you travelling light. It's quick, it looks the part, and the soft-top turns an ordinary drive into the reason you booked it. For a special occasion or a weekend on the coast, it's exactly right.

Skip it if you need to carry more than one passenger, move real luggage, or do daily family errands, because two seats and a 281-litre boot decide that for you. And if you want the open-air feel without the sports-car running costs, a regular convertible or a coupe will be cheaper to live with. The Z4 is rented for the drive and the roof down.
